Claudine Razaimamonjy : a chance to raise or drop 2017 Corruption Index

The achievement of Claudine Razaimamonjy trial with a fair sentence would show the world law and prison are  for everyone in Madagascar, not only for poors but also the richest one. Among all cases of corruption in Madagascar, the case of Claudine Razaimamonjy has captured the whole country’s attention after her arrest in April. 3, 2017 in Mahamasina by the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau (BIANCO) for not showing up after two convocations.  Always seen as a the presidential couple’s close relative, she is accused of misappropriation of public funds within thirteen communes. After two days investigation, her detention was interrupted when she knocked uncouscious hearing the warrant of detention ordered by the judge.

Since its beginning, the affair has opposed Government and National Union of Magistrates (SMM) led by Faniry Ernaivo and her  medical evacuation two weeks ago was qualified as a sanitary evasion as it didn’t respect legal procedure. Back to the country last Saturday, her stay at HJRA hospital seems unbelievable to some citizens and rumors are saying she is now lodging in Zomatel in Fianarantsoa though the hospital is still guarded by armed forces.

While the President Hery Rajaonarimampianina didn’t speak a  significant  word about the affair until now, the SMM has recently requested the penal system to carry out a follow-up inspection of her health. No journalists were allowed to take phoso so   no identification is available to prove her presence at the hospital… Besides, asked about Claudine health, doctors hide theirselves behind medical secrecy.

Seen from different angles, grey areas have yet to be clarified in this story. The US Ambassador in Madagascar Robert Yamate encouraged local government to pursue the legal proceeding of this affair. « This affair has no relation with politics and the fact that the embassy of the United States in Madagascar emits its thirst for truth has nothing to do with any form of interference ” he said.

Impunity has remained  a way to expand corruption in Madagascar and Claudine affair is a decisive one to enhance the country’s Corruption Perception Index.  If this affair won’t be left abandonned as many others were, the 2017 IPC might increase compared to last year (26/100). It remains to be seen how many points …
