UNICEF sponsors Southern African Under-12 tennis championships

Antananarivo, 2 May 2017 : UNICEF-Madagascar is lending its support to the southern African Team Tennis Championships for children under 12 years old. The tournament will take place from 13 to 17 May on the tennis courts of Ambohitsaina.

UNICEF, which works ensure that every child benefits from her/his basic human rights, is supporting the Malagasy Tennis Federation to make the game of tennis accessible to children from the disadvantaged sections of the capital.

UNICEF's contribution will focus on a variety of activities, including support for the organization of tennis clinics to introduce the game to primary public school children a week before the tournament,
training of ball girls and ball boys for the tournament and the invitation of 150 children from public primary schools (30 different students per day) to be among the spectators during the five days of compétition.

UNICEF will also take in charge of the awarding of two trophies for the two best youngest players at the end of the competition and the support to the national team by dressing them in UNICEF colors every day during the competition.

UNICEF is encouraging media outlets to not only cover this regional event, but to also to help give voice to the ambitions of children who are competing – as well as to those who dream of competing.

A press conference announcing the southern African Tennis Championships for children under 12 was organized today by the Malagasy Tennis Federation in the premises of DHL, also a sponsor of the event. In addition to an opportunity to announce the tournament, it was also an occasion for the Federation to introduce the members of the national under-12 team of three girls and three boys.
