Revival of Kaday Mangrove after ten years of restoration

Holding a key role in coastal biodiversity, the revival of Kaday mangrove is a won battle for the WWF working in Madagascar. Mangrove restoration is one of the majors conservation actions undertaken by the WWF in the Manambolo Tsiribihina landscape, west coas of Madagascar  since 2007.  Starting in 2011, annual planting campaigns have been conducted with local communities and young people. And the numbers are eloquent. More than 2 million mangroves have been planted since 2007.

On the site of Andranokaolo, near the village of Kaday, 119 km northwest of Morondava, 340 hectares of mangroves have been restored in 10 years. In addition, 1000 hectares of mangroves regenerated naturally after reforestation, even outside the restoration zone.

Differences between 2004 and 2007 satellite images  taken from Google Earth are striking. Those of 2004 show a complete naked landscape before the restoration led by WWF whereas on the 2007 images  after the restoration begins, we can observe feet of mangroves beginning to grow to completely cover the surface  in 2017.

The mangroves of Manambolo Tsiribihina in the Menabe region have always been overexploited by men. Land clearing for conversion to rice fields, use of certain species of wood for the construction and production of firewood and charcoal ...

This uncontrolled use led in the 60s and 70s to the total disappearance of the mangroves to Andranokaolo. But ten years of regular and sustained restoration have enabled lost forest to be reborn. Thus, bird, fish and crab habitats have reappeared, with a favorable evolution on the fishery, one of the main activities of the local community.

For effective management of the area, the community of Kaday is committed to taking charge of the management of these natural resources through a community management agreement formalized by Malagasy State. Much remains to be done for the mangroves of Manambolo Tsiribihina but these 10 years of effort show that with a strong will and hardworki, we can bring back the forest.
