The world pays tribute to Kofi Annan

 

INTERNATIONAL – 18 August , 2018. The short communique of the Kofi Annan Foundation shocked the whole world today.  Kofi Annan died at the age of 80 at Bernes hospital in Switzerland after a short illness. One of the most historical figures of the United Nations left the world surrounded by his wife Nane Lagergren and his children Ama, Nina and Kojo. He visited Madagascar in 2006 during the last year of his position as  the UN Secretary General since 1997.

 

Born on April 1938 in Kumasi – Ghana, Kofi Annan was the first UN General Secretary from Sub Saharian Africa which he joined in 1962. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for his achievement toward a more peaceful and better organized world.  The current UN Secretary Antonio Guterres qualified the man as one none could equal. «  Kofi Annan was a guiding force for good. I join the world in mourning his loss. In these turbulent and trying times, his legacy as a global champion for peace will remain a true inspiration for us all …. he came out of the ranks to lead the orgnization with an incomparably dignity and determination » he said. From every part of the globe, political leaders have tweeted their reactions and emotions.

In Ghana where Kofi Annan was bor, the President Nana Akufo Addo proclaimed a mourning week starting next Monday.  He was mainly know for this statement «  You are never too yound to lead and we are never too old to learn ».
