Atmosphere of Tension After The Election in Madagascar

Interim results of the latest presidential election has trapped Malagasy people into a virtual atmosphere of tension which many fear to lead to an unprecedent social crisis. While it clearly appears to be no more chances for the out-going President Hery Rajaonarimampianina to win with a tendency under 5%, a fierce battle has just began between the two leading candidates Andry Nirina Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana. None wants to hear about a possibility of a second round ; fake news, provocative posts and a too-early conviction to win ourtight in the first round by both sides … an appeal for calm seems to be not enough to appease a fanatic populace.

Open war between two trends

Forty eight hours after the election, the Electoral Independent National Commission (CENI) is lagging with only results from 2039 polling stations so less than 10% published on their website while the others are far ahead attaining sometimes 50%. Through their own television, radios and headquarters, Andry Nirina Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana  claimed through results got from their own local representatives their victory for this first round. Social network is the preferred battle field of their supporters, never has Facebook been used harshly to express his opinion and convey the so-called « true result ».    Some defines the situation as a psychological and cyber grooming.

The meeting supposed to be held by Marc Ravalomanana and his supporter on Saturday 10 November in Ambohijatovo has been cancelled to avoid any possible slippages in Antananarivo. This was decided thus due to the multitude of  social disorder threats online if a second round is to happen.  The same day, the CENI will hold a press briefing with about the situation.
